Zenith back up among the stars

This time it’s official, Zenith is (at last) back in the watchmaking firmament. The unveiling of the new Chronomaster Sport has put the Swiss brand back in a strong position in the highly competitive market for precision mechanical chronometers.

2021 got off to a flying start for watchmaking, thanks in particular to Zenith, which took everyone by surprise with the Chronomaster Sport. A renewed dynamism to be applauded from this venerable watchmaking House, a subsidiary of LVMH, which has been back in the spotlight since 2019 with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of its legendary El Primero chronograph movement, accurate to 1/10th of a second. In short, the holy grail for fine watchmaking enthusiasts, its heart beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour. And it’s this same movement that drives the Chronomaster Sport, an elegant 41 mm steel chronometer that is water-resistant to 100 metres and has a 60-hour power reserve.

The layout of the three chronograph dials is highly classic (running seconds at 9 o'clock, 60-second counter at 3 o'clock, 60-minute counter at 6 o'clock and date window at 4.30), while the black ceramic bezel offers an unusual, perfectly legible display to 1/10th of a second.

Available for its launch with a matt white or lacquered black dial and a rubber strap (€9,200) or steel bracelet (€9,700), the Chronomaster Sport indulged in a few touches of red on the tips of its chronograph hands. The sapphire crystal case-back reveals the new and improved El Primero calibre – the 3,600 – identifiable at first glance by openworked rotor marked with the five-pointed star emblem of Zenith.

Tempted but worried your friends will comment that this chronometer is heavily inspired by the Rolex Daytona (which isn’t wrong, let’s be honest)? Thanks to SoBARNES, you’ll be able to astound them into silence, by “reminding” them that from 1988 to 2000, the Daytona used a movement based on the Zenith El Primero, which earned it the nickname Daytona Zenith. So there!
