Le Carl Gustaf, the new king of St Barts

Considered one of the jewels of the Caribbean, Le Carl Gustaf has reopened its doors, now under the management of the Barrière Group. More than a 5-star hotel, this guest house, bathed in St Barts sunlight and overlooking the port of Gustavia, is inventing a new art de vivre.

It took Le Carl Gustaf (or the Carl, for those who know it well) 5 years of remodelling, a hurricane and a global pandemic to finally find its new cruising speed. This is an exceptional event, as this small hotel is the only one in St Barts to offer panoramic views of its capital's port of Gustavia. Given a complete makeover by interior design duo Giles & Boissier, it offers an intimate and relaxed elegance with only 21 rooms, suites and bungalows. A new Caribbean art de vivre that we adore:

The rooms subtly adopt the tropical nuances of French chiaroscuro, while the stone, wood and fabrics used are influenced by the 18th century, when the island was part of Sweden (this is where the capital and the hotel's name comes from, of course). The bungalows that delicately descend towards the town each have their own terrace and a small private pool. The ultimate in luxury accommodation lies in the 4,155 sq ft Loft Royal, with its three bedrooms (including one duplex), butler, rooftop pool and 180° view of the beach and port.

When it comes to dining, the Barrière Group has done a fabulous job by setting up a Fouquet's right in the heart of the Carl Gustaf. Its menu is designed by Pierre Gagnaire, who has added a Caribbean twist to classic French gastronomy and bistro recipes. A few steps further down you'll find Shell Beach, the hotel's stunning pink sand beach. Its restaurant, the Shellona, completes this gastronomic tour by adding a pinch of Mediterranean flavours...

And just between us, we asked Rimma Pignet, who works at the BARNES St-Barts office for her opinion on Le Carl Gustaf: "Having a drink on the terrace of the Fouquet's bar at sunset with its view overlooking Gustavia is probably one of the most beautiful experiences this island has to offer!" What more is there to add? Well, this one really stays between us, the Barnes Magazine can be found in the hotel's rooms and suites. So chic, is it not?
