Dior reads our cards for 2021

2020 may have definitely shaken up the codes of haute couture. Let’s just go straight out and say it: the short film released by Dior to present its Spring-Summer 2021 collection is simply fascinating. We take a closer look at these 15 daring minutes that show tarot cards and the divinatory arts in a new light, a theme that struck a chord with Christian Dior, known for his connections to fortune tellers.

Conjuring up the figures of the Fool, the Hanged Man, the High Priestess, the Devil and Death is certainly a bold move. But Dior pulled it off, through the passion of its creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, who wanted to reconnect with Christian Dior’s affiliation with clairvoyants. There was no show for the Spring-Summer 2021 Haute Couture collection. In its place is this 15-minute short film, soberly entitled “Le Château du Tarot”, directed by Matteo Garrone, the Italian filmmaker behind Gomorrah and Pinocchio, among others. Are you ready to meet your destiny?

In this story, the insider always needs the feminine complement and vice versa, because only such a fusion makes it possible to approach a formative path leading to self-awareness”, explains Dior. Hence the omnipresence of flats, of which Maria Grazia Chiuri is so fond and which are a rare sight in haute couture. The extraordinary evening gowns take on the air of abstract constructions, some with veritable bas-relief openwork bodices punctuated with illustrations by Roman artist Pietro Ruffo. Dior grey appears in tweed, cashmere and organza. While the iconic bar jacket is revisited in black velvet.

And because it’s you, and because we absolutely loved the film, here’s a making-of to take you behind the scenes without diminishing the magic:

Rounded off by a SoBARNESpedia fact: to create the universe of this “cinematic tale”, Matteo Garrone says he took his inspiration from the exquisite patterns of the Visconti-Sforza tarot cards, a set of 15 decks (all incomplete) dating from the 15th century and representing members of the Visconti and Sforza families in period garments. Look familiar? That’s no surprise, as the cards are considered to have influenced the numbering and interpretation of modern decks.
