Brown's Hotel, a London legend

The oldest hotel in London is still one of the most elegant today. A firm favourite of Chloe Rullaud, director of BARNES London.

LONDON - More than a hotel, Brown’s is an institution. At the heart of Mayfair, on Albermarle Street, a stone’s throw from the Cork Street art galleries and West End theatres, you will find yourself at one of the monuments of London culture. The history of this hotel – the first in the city – dates back to 1837 when James Brown, Lord and Lady Byron’s valet, acquired four Georgian houses to form a hotel establishment that was soon adopted by Victorian high society for its comfort and flawless service.

Extended and modernised with subtle touches generation after generation, Brown’s, which joined The Rocco Forte Collection in 2003, has lost none of its soul – in fact quite the contrary. Its decoration by Olga Polizzi succeeds in creating a contemporary atmosphere that still owes much to the past. This is particularly palpable between the sacred walls of the Donovan Bar, which pays homage to the famous 1960s portrait artist, Terence Donovan. In addition to a broad choice of champagnes served by the glass, we highly recommend the cocktails prepared by world renowned maestro, Salvatore Calabrese.

Not to mention the unmissable afternoon tea, steeped in history and served in the Drawing Room. Queen Victoria herself drank tea here in person, an anecdote that plays no small part in Brown’s reputation...

As for the rooms, our favourite has to be the Kipling Suite, where Rudyard himself is said to have written The Jungle Book. See it with your own eyes with SoBARNES:

And because Brown’s is a five-minute walk from Green Park and St James’s Park, it has partnered with Pashley Cycles, the oldest bike manufacturer in England, which provides its vintage bicycles to hotel clients for a bespoke ‘cycle safari’, including a traditional picnic prepared in Brown’s kitchens, served on request in a London park. A 100% #SoBARNES experience, naturally:
