Paris's 9th arrondissement : Shady chic

To the north, Pigalle and its seedy history, the epicentre of a shady past in which its nightlife played a significant role. Folies Bergères, the Casino de Paris, various theatres and the Musée de la Vie romantique. To the south, the Grands Boulevards and their legendary department stores, the Opera, the Olympia, Le Figaro... the more institutional side of Paris. Remaining loyal to its artistic and middle-class past, combining beautiful classical buildings with baroque facades that sometimes bear the traces of a dissolute life, the 9th arrondissement is the beating heart of the bohemian middle class. Its busy centre, which runs from the very popular Rue des Martyrs to South Pigalle, or SoPi, has the feel of a very trendy village, complete with restaurant terraces and organic traders.

The real estate market : a continuous increase

This shopping district has seen its prices rise steadily in line with its gentrification, with some properties to be found at €11,500 per sq.m but an average price more in the range of €13,000 per sq.m. The most sought-after apartments have two or three bedrooms and a certain old-fashioned charm about them and are located on upper floors, though artists’ studios and houses, which are extremely rare, are also in great demand.

Our advice

Our advice

“Having lived in this neighbourhood for 12 years and felt its pulse on a daily basis, having children in school here, shopping on Rue des Martyrs from traders who know me by my first name and know that I am always on the lookout for new things to try, I am in an excellent position to guide and advise you” - BARNES Martyrs Director

Which are the best streets? The shopping streets, particularly Rue des Martyrs, Avenue Trudaine, for its aristocratic appeal, and the more peaceful Place Saint Georges.

Something to consider: “Transactions can sometimes be complex in this originally working-class neighbourhood where things haven’t always been done by the book, but as a former lawyer myself I’m here to shed some light for you”

The amazing 9th arrondissement is teeming with great restaurants, exceptional places to visit and unusual cultural venues. Diaries at the ready!
