Tod’s takes on street art

The Tod’s Graffiti collection pays tribute to the legends of street art, with Keith Haring and Jean Michel-Basquiat leading the way.

Appointed Creative Director of Tod’s in October 2019, Italian designer Walter Chiapponi only had a few months to prove his worth before COVID-19 sent the fashion world into hibernation in Spring 2020. In other words, he put all his creativity into working on the Graffiti collection. This capsule, for both men and women, takes us back to 80s New York with an unexpected take on the Gommino moccasin cult as well as sneakers and vintage bags.

Using the influence of the two street art legends, Keith Haring and Jean Michel-Basquiat, was Walter Chiapponi’s idea, who believes that “street art is a source of infinite inspiration”. This capsule consequently pays a heart-felt tribute to the art of graffiti and the values that it represents, values celebrated in many languages with words like “Dream”, “Amor” and “Beauté”.

A risky gamble, but Tod’s Creative Director has the codes of street art down to perfection. You’ve guessed it! The bearded face with the crooked smile that appears here and there throughout the collection and over the logo in the video is none other than Walter Chiapponi himself. A self-deprecating self-portrait, we love it. And so very SoBARNES.
