The rut: an autumn ritual at Chambord

The rut is one of the most incredible performances played out in the forest. And Chambord provides front row seats to this 100% #SoBARNES experience.

Every year in early autumn, the forests resonate with the sounds of this evening bellow, the mating call of stags used to mark their territory and establish their reputation. An impressive roar combined with the deafening clash of antlers. A crucial time of year for dominant males, who endeavour to defend their territory and entice females. In order to improve their chances, they ration their food and can lose up to 25% of their weight (not just a human trick!). The rut culminates in mating in early October, and the subsequent birth of adorable little fawns between May and June.

What better place than the forest surrounding the Château de Chambord to observe stags, deer and fawns in their natural habitat? At the heart of the Sologne region, this national estate spanning 13,000 acres and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List boasts over 12 miles of trails ideal for observing – and listening to – this mating ritual from the miradors in the company of a guide. But remember to book your place with the Château, as access to the estate is closed to visitors after 6pm..

And for the full experience, book your #SoBARNES stay at the Relais de Chambord: just a few yards from the château itself, the former Hôtel Saint-Michel has been revamped by Jean-Michel Wilmotte to offer all the charm of a manor house and the comfort of a contemporary and cosy establishment. And the icing on the cake - 15 of its 55 rooms and suites look out at this masterpiece built for Francis I...
