Audemars Piguet joins forces with Super Heroes

If you’re an Avengers fan at heart, you’ll be as excited as we are by the launch of the Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon. A watchmaking marvel that has been the talk of the town since it was unveiled by Audemars Piguet. Luckily, SoBARNES knows a thing or two about super heroes.

It’s never too late to make a dream come true. Something Audemars Piguet CEO François-Henry Bennhamias has proved, having first aspired to collaborate with Marvel and its Super Hero Universe over 15 years ago. It was his friendship with actor Don Cheadle, who plays War Machine in the Avengers films, that finally sparked the partnership. “When François told me about his long-standing interest in teaming up with Marvel, I said, ‘No time like the present. Let’s give them a call.’ As an Avenger and a long-time friend, it was a no brainer.”, says Don Cheadle.

And because that’s just the kind of story SoBARNES loves, here’s a clip to make you feel like you were there in person:

The first iteration of this improbable partnership between Swiss Haute Horlogerie and Hollywood science fiction comes in the form of the Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon, revealed during a spectacular virtual live show in Los Angeles. This limited edition of 250 pieces is equally spectacular, with its sandblasted titanium case and its black ceramic crown featuring a hand-painted white gold Black Panther character, ready to pounce, and a flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock.

The watch is clearly designed for fans of the Marvel Universe, but you have to admire the technical mastery displayed by Audemars Piguet in the Royal Oak Concept Black Panther Flying Tourbillon. While the texture on the Black Panther suit is laser sculpted, the details on the hands, claws, muscles and facial features are all hand engraved.

The amazing result naturally has purists clamouring about mixed genres... But let’s not forget that the legend that is Gérald Genta, the father of the Royal Oak, launched a limited Audemars Piguet series in the 80s featuring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck on the dial!

And between us, it makes a nice change to see watchmakers getting out of their comfort zone...
