Monaco: the city-state of sculpture

Headed up by Artcurial, the principality is transforming into an open-air gallery over the summer. From Niki de Saint Phalle to César and Robert Combas to Rony Cragg, the sculptures going to auction on 22 July will be on display until the end of August. SoBARNES takes an artistic stroll.

Artcurial has been holding its summer sales on The Rock for almost twenty years now. After the success of the inaugural Monaco Sculptures in 2019, the Parisian auction house is doing it all over again in 2021, taking art lovers on an original journey through the Principality to meet the greatest names of the 20th and 21st century. Open to the public and free of charge, this itinerary holds its own against some of the world’s greatest museums and promises plenty of surprises, from Bernard Venet’s monumental Arc next to the Casino to Philippe Hiquily's La Femme Lune, which stands 6 metres tall in front of the Hôtel Hermitage, and the delightful Adam et Eve sculpted by Niki de Saint Phalle.

The itinerary set out by Artcurial and the Société des Bains de Mer will take us (that’s right, we'll be there) from the salons of the Hôtel de Paris and the Hermitage to the Monte-Carlo Beach Club via the gardens of Petite Afrique and the Spélugues.

These sculptures, valued between a few thousand and a few hundred thousand euros, will be auctioned on 22 July during Artcurial's summer session at the Hôtel Hermitage along with the traditional jewellery, watch and vintage car sales. Not forgetting the now cult Hermès and Luxury Bags sale.

So which is our favourite, you ask? Well, for once, we don't have one. Or rather, there are too many to name...
