Look for the manuscript under the arch

If walls could talk, they would tell us incredible stories about the passionate readers who have passed through the doors of Librairie Galignani under the archway of the Rue de Rivoli since opening in 1856.

Yet the story of this mythical place in the 1st arrondissement of Paris began in Venice in 1520, when Simone Galignani (who is a gentleman) published a book of Latin grammar thanks to the new invention of the printing press. To our delight, the Galignani prospered and traveled to France.

The house’s reputation is exceptional, with a special affinity for art books. We would have loved to meet Dali, who liked to stay for hours and leaf through pages of beautiful works, or to discuss with one of the Galignanis when he was staying at the Hotel Meurice, its neighbor.

There are books as far as the eye can see in an elegant and warm setting, illuminated by a period glass. The Shakespearean books have always had a special place in the beautiful wooden bookshelves, French and foreign literature, children’s books and coffee-table books also have a place on the shelves and the large reading tables. The international clientele is very demanding, but the libraire knows how to satisfy it.

Millions of references are available, be sharp and ask the impossible questions to these passionate booksellers, they’ll be more than happy to embark on journey to find a rare edition, even an antique. Finally, know that Galignani is the chicest bookshop in Paris, and that it hosts dedication sessions, which are very prized to Parisians and the jet-setters.

Nothing could be more delightful than to devour the latest novel on a bench under the shade of a chestnut tree in the Tuileries Garden.

Are you coming? You only have to cross the avenue.
