Given that fashion is such an ever-changing concept, it’s hardly surprising that the fashions of the 70s are slowly putting their corny past behind them as they begin to infiltrate even the trendiest of wardrobes. A trend led by Lacoste x Ricky Regal, the label launched by pop star Bruno Mars with the crocodile-loving brand. Have you been dreaming of the day the velvet tracksuit and disco shirt make their comeback? Well, the wait is over!
Like it or not, you have to admit that there is a certain style to it. Lacoste and Bruno Mars have unveiled a somewhat surprising collaboration that has been named not after the Uptown Funk performer, but after Ricky Regal, an original alter ego created especially for the occasion. “I’ve been very fortunate to have been asked to do collaborations in the past, but it always came with guidelines.” says Bruno Mars “Lacoste was the first and only brand that said ‘Bruno we want you to make this truly yours.’ When I’m on stage my name is Bruno Mars. When I’m making lavish luxurious garments, I go by Ricky Regal.”
Inspired by the great classics of the 70s, with a mix of psychedelic shirts, pop tracksuits, tap shoes and aviator sunglasses, this unisex collection is daring in its use of strong colours, including mustard yellow, petrol green, aubergine purple and coral red, all of which feature in the collection. “Working with Bruno and getting a glimpse into his unique world was a great adventure”, explains Lacoste's creative director Louise Trotter. “He has a very clear vision and is obsessive with every detail. There wasn’t a single aspect that he was not fully involved in”.
This Lacoste x Ricky Real collection is a funky cross between the Jackson Five and Starsky & Hutch, and we’re really quite taken with it. Now, the real question: who will be bold enough to resurrect the disco look with the winning combo of bell-bottoms and a ruffle shirt? SoBARNES will be keeping a close eye on this one...
