An architectural feat, in Paris

This house listed for sale with BARNES Exclusive Properties is probably one of the best kept secrets in Paris’ 16th arrondissement! Everything here is extraordinary, which is just the effect the owners and the architect were going for. Get ready for an equally unique private tour.

Nestled amidst the greenery of a discreet little private island between Auteuil and La Muette, Villa L. is more than just a home. It is an architectural feat using exceptional volumes in a bold style. It is clear that the design is a tribute to Mallet-Stevens and Le Corbusier, the architects behind several houses and mansions in the neighbouring streets that are considered masterpieces of the 20th century. But this 14,208 sq ft house is one of a kind:

The use of criss-crossing ellipses infuses the spaces of Villa L. with elegance, based on a design by Italian architect Stefania Stera: “The owners asked me how to show this incredible site – almost a wilderness surrounded by high-rise buildings – off to its best advantage. We spent a long time working on the model of the house. The use of ellipses allowed us to break free of these constraints and to bring the construction into harmony with nature, which is omnipresent”.

And the result is astounding: the house tears up the rulebook completely and is indissociable from its 0.4-acre garden. A far cry from the classic architecture of Parisian townhouses, it uses the different levels to allow the light to flood in with the changing seasons. The garden and terraces are a natural extension of the house, while each view point, each panorama, creates the impression of entering a new world.

We’d be hard pushed to pick out our favourite feature here at SoBARNES, there’s just so many! Starting with the 14 frescoes painted by Italian artist Marco Tirelli. Or the arrangements of mirrors and the secret passages that add a magical feel.  The 5 floors reveal – or conceal – their hidden openings and their mystery furniture, like the seemingly suspended hinged wardrobe in the master suite, or the cupboards in the main sitting room, seemingly unopenable to the untrained eye.

There is no lounge or dining room so to speak, as the spaces interact throughout the day and the seasons. But each piece of furniture is exactly in its place, designed for a specific use. Particularly when it comes to the seven bedrooms, given that the villa is a real family home as well as a setting for lavish receptions from another age.

The terraces, creating a hanging garden, also form an integral part of the design. They create a delightful sense of privacy under the Parisian sky, against the backdrop of the Eiffel Tower. Villa L. is currently presented as a finished piece, in immaculate condition. “Almost hidden at the end of a private street, it is sheltered from public view”, says Laure de La Rivière of BARNES Exclusive Properties. “Which is probably its foremost asset!”

Asking price of €26 million.
