Let’s be clear, the gossip column wasn’t particularly thrilling in 1840. In terms of the Who's Who, the Duke of Nemours wedded the Princess of Saxe-Cobourg-Kohary on 7 April. Sugar Duties were voted on 3 July. The first gas cooker was lit in Paris. Cabinet-makers rebelled in the Faubourg-Saint-Antoine district (*). Yet it was also the year this stunning 7,653 sq ft townhouse set on more than a quarter-acre of grounds was built, close to the city centre. A haven of green topped with a neo-Classic jewel. The pool may not be an original feature, but we’re willing to let that slide!
