On a count of 3 ...

At first, we wanted to open with a “hat-trick” joke until we discovered that the Refinery Hotel, a superb neo-gothic tower built in 1912 and a former hat factory, does not allow even the chicest chapeau to grace its own rooftop lounge-bar (according to the dress code).

But on our second attempt, let’s get to the heart of the matter, climb onto the roof of the hotel, to the Refinery Rooftop Bar, master of the holy trinity of hospitality: good food, good cocktails, and good ambiance. Plus, a panoramic view of Midtown Manhattan, we are in heaven. Here at the Refinery Rooftop Bar, actually it’s a party, but three different moods. You will be told:

Scene 1: Snack (or more) indoors

On chilly winter evenings, when the wind blows in the streets of New York, you take refuge in the warm comfort of the Refinery, with its industrial-chic decor, exposed brick walls. We also like to curl on the  big soft sofas, in front of the crackling fireplace. Zach, the most adorable manager, will check on you and offer a word of advice on Chef Jeff Haskell’s menu. For us, it was a tantalizing trio: the crispy calamari, the lobster roll, and the divine chocolates of Jacques Torres Bon Bons.

Scene 2: Drink outdoors

On sweet summer nights, when the breeze caresses your hair (and while others suffocate below), it’s nice to relish at the heights of Refinery's terrace, with an original cocktail of mixologist Alex Ott (formerly of the Buddha Bar in Paris). For us, a Rooftop Sparkler made to order, because Patrón Barrel Select Reposado tequila (we tasted, delicious) plus a view of the Empire State Building before a glowing background worthy of CGI (computer-generated-imagery) plus a table directly under the sparkling stars is a triptych not to be overlooked.

Scene 3: Come for the ambiance somewhere in between

During the seasons that cannot choose - coat or sports jacket, stockings or not - the rooftop follows, unable to commit to indoors or out with a spectacular retractable glass roof, enchanted by marvelous lighting that reveals other patrons who did not hesitate. Here, it offers a triple threat: 1) special, intimate ambiance, alive but not excessive, 2) with an even distribution of celebrities and illustrious unknowns, and 3) a DJ with the magic touch.

Well, technically the place is topped off by a hat, even if a glass one. But you know what they say: third time's the charm …3,2,1, hurry to the Refinery Rooftop!
