My Mother's Castle, in the Basque country

When you were little, you would pile into the back of your parents’ grey Renault Dauphine together with your brother and sister, and off the five of you would go on your summer holidays. At the end of the road, your father would say: right or left? To the right, the family would be off to Brittany; to the left, the holidays would be spent in the Basque country. That was the tradition - every year, the holidays would be put to the family vote. You would start negotiations with your brother a month beforehand to make sure he voted with you. It had to be the southwest that won! You haven’t thought about all this for years, and yet here, standing in this fully restored 17th century farm, spanning 4,844 sq ft plus outbuildings, these memories come flooding back. You recognise the fireplace in the living room and the view from the bedroom on the second floor... This is it. This is where you used to come to spend your holidays when the left route won the day. A wave of nostalgia washes over you. The memory of summer happiness. The 12-acre property is for sale. There’s no such thing as coincidence.
