Back to school, in Normandy

If you listen carefully, you can hear the history seeping through the walls of this 7,535 sq ft villa as it recounts the dark hours of the war, when Eisenhower set up his headquarters here. Built in the early 20th century, its Art Nouveau style certainly won’t have escaped your notice, either. This is probably also a good time to brush up on your fashion knowledge with a to visit the childhood home of Christian Dior here in Granville, complete with pretty powder pink façade and delicately appointed garden. When the history lesson is over, it’s time to move on to geography as you head to the nearby D-Day beaches. Just next door to the other side, meanwhile, lie the Chausey islands, visible in the distance from the villa or a little closer up on a boat ride across the water. If none of that really appeals to you (which would be a shame because we highly recommend the Chausey blue lobster at the Hôtel du Fort), maybe the indoor swimming pool and squash and tennis courts, set amid 1.5 acres of pleasant wooded and planted grounds, will tempt you to get a few lessons in! You could even host a fabulous reception for up to 40 guests beneath the rotunda. Will you be ready for the pop quiz?
