Every year in early autumn, the forests resonate with the sounds of this evening bellow, the mating call of stags used to mark their territory and establish their reputation. An impressive roar combined with the deafening clash of antlers. A crucial time of year for dominant males, who endeavour to defend their territory and entice females. In order to improve their chances, they ration their food and can lose up to 25% of their weight (not just a human trick!). The rut culminates in mating in early October, and the subsequent birth of adorable little fawns between May and June.<\/p>\n
