Look in the shoe for the bill

There are only so many places that can pull off using a door as a dining table, and still manage to be chic. But we’ve found one in the heart of Lisbon.

The cafe we’re about to show you is a bit hidden, a little quirky, and most closely resembles a trendy art house, which are only a few of the reasons why we love it. If you’re curious about the others, head to the theater “Teatro da Garagem,” continue inside pass the art exhibitions, and descend 2 floors to Café da Garagem. We’ll be waiting for you there.

First of all, if you’re a) a regular at the Hermès store in Chiado or b) a dedicated window shopper, then you’re already familiar with the talented woman behind the cafe’s signature look, Lisbon-native Joana Astolfi, the artist, architect, and designer who is not only responsible for the luxury shop’s fabulous window displays but also for this little cafe’s unique interior design and lovable ambiance. Like the rest of her work, the cafe has a vintage feel, artistic and very tasteful, with an air of humor in its oddities. For example, the pairs of 1950s footwear mounted on the wall of the cafe, the dimly-lit, delicate antique lamps hanging from the ceiling, the cute birdies singing to you from their birdcage, a sleek piano, and other rare memorabilia you might only find in a fancy antique shop or the closet of your most stylish grandma.

And once seated at that door-table we mentioned, back to the mirror, you’ll open your eyes to one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Lisbon. Actually, please excuse us, if you scoot your chair a few feet forward to the wooden benches fused into the huge bay windows, where there are often many young people reading or acting studious with an espresso or latte, then you will have an unobstructed view of the city and its extraordinary landscape. With that, we’re not quite sure how anyone could focus.

We hear you, enough talk of decor and design. Patrons often station themselves at this cafe for a little coffee break, a moment of quiet, to catch up with friends or for a nice bite in a trendy atmosphere over an order of tostas and tostadas.

When the time has come to rush off to your next rendezvous, don’t be alarmed if you can’t find the bill, just check the reptile-skinned loafer on the table. There lies a pleasant surprise for your wallet.
