When Geneva celebrates watchmaking excellence

The 2020 prize list of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) was something of a digital firework display. Women’s and men’s, sports or ornate, the watches honoured this year vied for creativity and audacity.

Created in 2001, the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève is to the watchmaking world what the Oscars are to cinema. SoBARNES had previously presented the 84 finalists of the 2020 edition, divided into 14 categories for 19 awards including the prestigious “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix . Due to health restrictions, the traditional awards ceremony was replaced by a digital show hosted by French actor Edouard Baer.

The most sought-after prizes went to Piaget, awarded the “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix for the Altiplano Ultimate Concept watch, to Bovet 1822, Ladies’ Watch Prize for Miss Audrey, and to Voutilainen, Men’s Watch Prize for the 28SC (see the full prize list below).

It was thus Piaget that received the ultimate reward with the world's thinnest mechanical watch ever created: the Altiplano Ultimate Concept at just 2mm thick. We let you into a little 100% SoBARNES secret about this marvel: as it was impossible to fit it with a classic crown (winder) because it was so thin, Piaget invented a flat, telescopic system with its own specially designed winding tool!
