This collection is unique in its celebration of Les Ateliers Martine as rendered by Casa Lopez, a leader in contemporary Western rugs. Owner and art director Pierre Sauvage fell in love with this historic institution founded by Paul Poiret, a pioneering French couturier who helped organize the very first fashion shows. In its day, Les Ateliers Martine presented pieces by young female artists-in-training who produced imaginative, colorful motifs. Inspired by the beauty of flowers and animals, the designs were portrayed across fabrics and wallpaper. The Ateliers then grew to include furniture, ceramics, and rugs adored by celebrities of the time.
Filled with admiration for these exceptionally spontaneous motifs, Pierre Sauvage dreamed of releasing a series of rugs in their honor. In his search for establishments hiding these treasures, he met with the teams at the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts, whose collection features some of the original designs. The works on display included hand-painted gouache pieces and sketches designed for enchanting wallpaper collections. Pierre Sauvage chose four floral motifs, reproducing them identically with the original colors to create Arraiolos rugs. These Portuguese fabrics once covered the walls and floors of houses and were made using an artisanal oblique cross-stitching technique. The resulting rugs showcase tableaux of exquisite mauve anemones against deep black backdrops, bright bouquets of chrysanthemums in a palette of purple and blue, a smattering of rural nostalgia with sweet peas, and rows of spellbinding ferns.
