Interview With Valérie Messika About her Idea of Luxury

Valérie Messika: My Idea of Luxury

Combining daring and talent, the designer has spent ten years revisiting one of jewellery’s emblematic gemstones: the diamond. Her “second skin” jewellery is made with her in mind. Feminine, elegant and modern.

Your first memory?

On a cruise along the Italian coasts on a magnificent yacht with my father when I was 12. We stopped in a different port every day, with nothing to guide us except what we wanted to do. That feeling of complete freedom will always be my definition of true luxury.

A texture that inspires you?

The voluptuousness and incredible softness of Sisleÿa face cream.

A piece of furniture you dream of buying?

Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair, timeless and chic. It’s a shame so many people have copied it.

The perfect outfit for a party?

A Saint Laurent dinner jacket, perfectly fitted and dangerously sexy, a really beautiful pair of stilettos, a small bag and some Messika jewellery. I adore the masculine/ feminine elegance of this look.

Your current perfume?

I’m not really a perfume girl. I’ve always stuck to Thé Vert by Bulgari.

An incredibly holiday destination?

The Maldives, a perfect harmony between luxury and nature. I love the Six Senses Laamu Hotel, it’s heaven on stilts. You spend your days barefoot, living for boat trips and dinners by sunset. There’s nothing better for recharging your batteries.

Your favourite brand of shoes?

Gianvito Rossi, both comfortable and feminine.

A couple’s getaway?

Wherever, as long as you’re in love! I have a soft spot for the Amalfi coast in Italy. If you’re looking for the easy life, I recommend the legendary Le Sirenuse Hotel in Positano, built on a rock face overlooking the sea.

A great drink?

A flute of Louis Roederer champagne.

The perfect car?

I love the timeless charm of a beautiful Porsche. The brand has managed to constantly reinvent itself over the years, while keeping its essence intact.

Your next holiday destination?

Marrakech, at the Selman Hotel. This place has a unique, endearing atmosphere, and was designed by Jacques Garcia at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. They’re experts in the subtle art of hospitality.

Your must-have extravagance?

Incredibly tender green olives with the most exquisite taste, grown by a small Italian producer on the Amalfi coast I love so much. I have them sent to me in Paris all year long!
